See a printer as several linked paths

A printer job has a physical destination, but its description crosses several layers. A model record identifies the family. A renderer turns page data into a device-specific form. A queue orders work and keeps host-side job information. The queue is not the printer. A port or network path carries messages. Status and capability records describe what the surrounding system believes the device can report or accept.

Scanning belongs beside printing without being the same function. A multifunction device may share a product name, enclosure, and transport while exposing a separate acquisition interface. The USB, wireless, and network pages make that distinction concrete. “Connected” can describe an addressable path; it does not by itself prove that a particular print queue or scanner stream is available.

Compare vendor and model branches

The Brother branch gives model identity and queue relationships room to breathe, including the HL-L2340DW, HL-2040, HL-L6210DW, MFC-L8900CDW, HL-L8360CDW, and HL-L3290CDW. HP separates printing, scanning, ink terminology, wireless paths, and output behavior. Canon uses PIXMA identity, network transport, and scanner compatibility as its anchors.

Epson adds a clear boundary between a host-side utility, a scanner function, a printer description, and firmware. The Hewlett Packard route preserves its own family label instead of silently treating it as an alias for HP. These branches are comparisons of relationships, not claims that every model shares a component, feature, or specification.

Read capability and lifecycle records

A generic print representation can support a shared path while omitting a vendor-specific capability. That difference concerns description and rendering, not necessarily the identity of the physical printer. Package-lifecycle pages add version, association, retained records, published capabilities, replacement, and retirement. Records have owners. The queue is concrete. Each event names a relationship; none proves that every layer changed at once.

Use the queue pages for ordering, renderer boundaries, and job state. Use network pages for discovery, endpoints, transport, and protocols. Use the scanner pages for acquisition. The glossary supplies terms such as hardware ID, manifest, endpoint, firmware, and signed catalog, allowing a reader to state which record supports which claim without turning the hub into a setup or repair guide.
