Rollback is a package direction

Rollback describes a lifecycle transition toward an earlier package or selection record for a laptop device. It is not a universal reset of platform firmware, user settings, application state, or every related component. The record’s owner defines the transition’s scope.

Retention enables lifecycle history

A platform can preserve package metadata, files, ranking information, or installation history for managed transitions. A retained record is evidence that the platform knows about a package; it does not establish that the package is active or compatible with every state of the laptop.

Components can diverge

A laptop’s audio, Wi-Fi, input, display, and platform-controller packages have independent identities and lifecycles. A rollback record for one device relationship does not automatically describe the others, even when they were published by one vendor.

Runtime state remains separate

Selection, staging, activation, power state, endpoint publication, and interface exposure are related but distinct. A rollback reference should name the package and device relationship rather than using the word as a conclusion about the complete laptop.
